At last, the iPhone SE will get a redesign, yet it may still look exactly like the flagship model from two generations ago. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg provides this piece of information, stating that the next "SE" trim might be released in the first part of 2019.

According to the rumor, "the new model will resemble the iPhone 14, including the notch cutout at the top." In light of this, the next iPhone may also be the final Apple smartphone to feature a physical home button in addition to an integrated Touch ID sensor.

The last two iterations of the iPhone SE have essentially adhered to the same design philosophy, which was first unveiled with the iPhone 8. It won't be particularly attractive, though, as the pill-shaped cutout that the iPhone 14 series debuted is the most recent design iteration of the boat-shaped notch, which was never really an eye candy.

Yes, we will have a larger screen now that the bulky top and bottom bezels have been removed, albeit it will probably still be an LCD display with a refresh rate of 60Hz. A larger battery and MagSafe compatibility might be the more exciting—and useful—upgrade.

AI for all

However, the most enticing feature of the upcoming iPhone SE might be its compatibility with Apple Intelligence, a collection of generative AI capabilities that includes enhanced ChatGPT support, a redesigned Siri, and deeper app integration.

It also implies that we are receiving Apple's newest chips. Only the A17 Pro (found in the iPhone 15 Pro pair) and the A18 series, which powers the iPhone 16 lineup, have been known to use Apple Intelligence thus far.

Given the past of the models that came before it, it is conceivable that the 2025 iPhone SE will include the A18. It also won't be out of character. It is nearly a given, though, that a price increase is imminent when the newest silicon is packed with an upscale design language.

That won't be shocking, to reiterate. We might as well get ready for the "AI tax" next year given the additional costs associated with serving generative AI on a phone in terms of more expensive silicon and cloud server costs. Apple levied a 5G tax on the $429 iPhone SE of the current generation.

Thus far, the next iPhone SE appears to be a thrilling update, particularly for those who simply need a dependable phone with a sticker price that fits their budget—one that lacks the bells and whistles of multiple cameras and sophisticated capacitive buttons.

According to Bloomberg, new iPad models and a new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air in both 11- and 13-inch sizes will be available early in 2019.
